The safest technique for amalgam removal in Lawrence
By Dr. Miller
Mercury amalgam (silver) was once the dental material of choice. It was considered a great development in dentistry, providing a long-lasting, easy to use, inexpensive way to treat cavities. Of course, that was in the 1800s. Thankfully, science and technology have evolved since that time.
Today, we have a much better understanding of the effects of dental amalgam, and we have beautiful, biocompatible alternatives. Although some dentists still offer primitive amalgam restorations, Dr. Kelly Miller does not use any mercury products, opting instead for porcelain, composite resin, and other healthy cosmetic materials. They also offer amalgam filling removal, adhering the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) mercury safe protocol.
Safe amalgam removal
Any dentist can remove a filling. However, not all dentists go about this in the same way, and improper techniques can expose you and the dental team to dangerous levels of mercury. The common filling removal method is simply drilling it out, which causes heat and dust. The mercury safe technique focuses on removing the filling in larger chunks, reducing both vapor and particulate matter in the air. Additionally, physical barriers, air filtration, and other measures help protect you from contacting or breathing excess mercury. We also take the additional step of mercury separation to help protect the environment from mercury waste. What to expect
The procedure will take a little longer than standard filling removal, but the benefits of health and safety are well worth it. We make every effort to ensure your comfort throughout the process. The area will be numbed prior to treatment, and sedation is available for anxious individuals during any procedure.Once the amalgam filling has been safely removed and the affected tooth has been cleaned, the next step is restoration. Sometimes the old filling can simply be replaced with a new composite filling. However, the thermal expansion of amalgam fillings creates pressure on the surrounding tooth area, often causing fractures. Depending on the amount of tooth damage, we may recommend a porcelain crown, which can be created right here in our office with CEREC technology.
